The first decision on any damaged panel is whether to repair it or replace it, and it is worth understanding why a shop might choose either one.

The case for repairing

Metal that has been dented is stretched, and skilled hands can bring it back. When the paint is intact, the area is accessible, and the damage does not cross a body line, repairing is usually faster, cheaper, and better than replacing. You keep the original panel, the original welds, and the original corrosion protection, and nothing about the car's history changes.

The case for replacing

Stretched or torn metal, damage on a hard crease, or a panel the manufacturer specifically says may not be repaired. Modern vehicles use high-strength and boron steels in defined places, and those either go back exactly as designed or they get replaced. Filling over them looks fine and compromises the structure.
